Despite my apparent confidence and composure, inside I was reeling. I made it through the rest of the day at the shop on autopilot. I pretended to work at the little workstation Zed had kindly set up for me in his office, when in actual fact I was taking stock of how the conversation had gone very differently to how I’d envisioned. Actually, it had gone in totally the opposite direction.

Armed with the information I’d gleaned from the extended background search, I had planned on starting to gently pry open the tightly locked vault that was Zed’s mind.

What I hadn’t anticipated was being totally blindsided, first by him openly articulating the details of the accident—the initial search had only told me that he’d been sentenced for vehicular manslaughter—but not the name of the victim. Nor had I envisioned him asking me on a date, and then the two of us sucking face like the world was ending. The icing on the cake had been the fact that I had fallen so far down the rabbit hole of our tryst that he had been the one to pull away.

What the actual…?

When I opened my front door at 7:59 p.m., I was shocked again. That time because Zed looked like Prince Charming—not that it took much. He’d slicked back his thick blond hair and wore a dress shirt, slacks, and formal shoes. The former was folded to the elbow, revealing the tats on his muscular, firm biceps. He was like every girl’s wet dream, and I couldn’t get enough of just looking at him.
